Do you really know what kind of animal a dog is?

To begin with, what kind of animal is a "dog"?
According to the world-renowned Webster dictionary, the dog has been defined as "carnivorous domesticated mammal". According to the Japanese dictionary, or Kojien of Iwanami Shoten, it is defined as "beast of the carnivora". It is clear to see by definition, the regular diet for dogs is meat. Technically speaking, the dog’s short digestive organs is are best suited to digesting and absorbing the proteins, vitamins, and minerals contained in meat. Even if the owner is a vegetarian, dogs’ digestive tracts are not good at digesting grains and vegetables.

Originally carnivores, it is impossible to imagine that dogs would seek out and eat corn and soybeans of their own accord. However, even the “premium” dog food on the market are mostly those which are made up of primarily these grains. The ingredients on the nutrition facts are sorted in descending order by weight. See what the first three main ingredients are on the label. Is this food safe to feed your dog?

Also, it is a mistake to think that as long as you are giving your dog “meat”, it is alright. Beef and pork are strong allergens for dogs, and thus are by no means a good staples for dog food. In addition, white chicken meat is high in phosphorus, which destroys the calcium that the body has absorbed.
By unwittingly continuing to give grain-based pet food, and beef and pork, this is putting a big burden on your dog’s digestive organs, raising the chances of causing itchiness and allergies, inducing visceral disease, and having a large impact overall on the health of your dog.

How safe is your pet’s food?

As owners, it goes without saying that you want a safe food for your pet. However, in regards to the materials and additives used in pet foods, there are absolutely no public safety standards or regulations in Western countries or Japan. It is not even mandatory to label the ingredients. Since the pet food industry has no legal definition of “additives”, there is a possibility that dangerous additives have been used even in the pet foods that refer to their products as using "all-natural materials", or "natural" and "additive-free",.

Pet food that is sold within Japan, makers are required to voluntarily display only 80% of the ingredients used in their product (only listing the main ingredients is required, not strict notation of all ingredients). Of course, since chemically synthesized, dangerous additives will never be more than 20% of the weight of the product, it very likely these additives are not displayed.

The reason for using dangerous additives

First of all, why do you need to use dangerous additives in pet food? There are three major reasons.

(1) The existence of highly effective antibiotics that lower production costs
(2) The long time needed to preserve the product between production and reaching the hands of the consumer.
(3) Preventing oxidation of the bad fats and oils contained in products

For example, let's look at the current state of the additives used to prevent oxidation of waste oil. This oil, which is used in restaurants, is already highly oxidized. To prevent oxidation of these inferior oils, it becomes necessary to use substantial amounts of potent drugs. In addition, the waste oils have picked up the smell of many foods, which creates a very appetizing "food" smell for dogs.

The commonly added antioxidants and preservatives for these oils are known carcinogens as well as endocrine disrupters that can cause reproductive abnormalities, and are extremely toxic and dangerous chemically synthesized substances.
The most popular synthetic chemical antioxidant used in pet food is ethoxyquin (it is also called ethoxy zole, etc., but they all refer to the same chemical). This is a synthetic chemical additive of the dioxin system. This is also an infamous chemical in a defoliant that was used at the time of the Vietnam War, and currently as a pesticide that has been banned because of its high toxicity, but there have been cases where it has been added to pet food and not displayed on the nutrition facts.

Pet food manufacturers have declared that there is no problem concerning the safety of antioxidants, but as a staple in the diet of your pet over a lifetime, the possibility that dangerous additives are used unbeknownst to the owner are high.

Impact of diet

There is an event known among breeders, that when the same food is fed to dogs over three generations, the parents and offspring all die of cancer in the same organ. Why do they all die of cancer of the same organ? Can it all be attributed to genetics? The food would still be considered the largest contributing factor. As evidence, two dogs, even when born from the same parent, if one sibling eats a different food, they do not have the same cause of death.

In addition, if itchiness, allergies, or visceral disease, etc. does not heal even after seeing the vet, there is a high possibility that the culprits are ingredients in bad foods, or even the human foods, snacks and jerky owners casually give their pets.
